Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping amidst ongoing trade tensions with the U.S., while a former diplomat, Michael Kovrig, who was detained in China for over a thousand days, is cautioning Ottawa about the threats posed by China to Canada.

Kovrig emphasized the importance of transparency from politicians and the government in informing Canadians about the risks and benefits of engaging with China. He stressed the need for careful and guarded approaches to manage potential drawbacks in the relationship.

Regarding China’s recent shift towards a charm offensive globally, Kovrig warned that it primarily represents a change in rhetoric rather than a shift in behavior. He urged Canadians to recognize this diplomatic strategy by China as merely superficial.

Detained in 2018 by Chinese authorities in response to the arrest of Huawei’s CFO, Meng Wanzhou, Kovrig’s case significantly strained Canada-China relations. As the U.S. trade war impacts Canadian industries, the Canadian government is exploring new trade partnerships with countries like India and China, emphasizing public safety and interference concerns.

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand described the foreign policy approach towards these nations as pragmatic and serving Canadian interests. However, Kovrig emphasized the importance of implementation over rhetoric in such diplomatic endeavors.

Kovrig highlighted the complexities of Canada’s relationship with China, acknowledging the necessity of advancing diplomatic ties despite personal discomfort over past hostilities.

Canada-U.S. Trade Dynamics

Carney’s current trip to Malaysia, initiating the Indo-Pacific Summit meetings, gains significance as U.S. President Donald Trump halts trade discussions with Canada following an Ontario government ad that criticized tariffs using former President Reagan’s words.

Former chief of staff Derek Burney emphasized the need for a strong stance in dealing with Trump, recalling the commitment of Reagan and Mulroney to free trade in the past. Burney urged Canada to assert its trade interests during Carney’s engagements in Asia.
