Hungarian voters on Sunday ended the 16-year rule of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, rejecting his authoritarian policies and far-right connections in a surprising election outcome with global implications. Pál Magyar, the election winner and a former Orbán ally, focused his campaign on anti-corruption measures and citizen-centric issues like healthcare and public transportation. Magyar has committed to repairing Hungary’s relationships with the European Union and NATO, which deteriorated under Orbán’s leadership. European leaders swiftly extended their congratulations to Magyar.

The Tisza party, led by Magyar, is expected to secure a majority in parliament, although it remains uncertain if they will achieve a two-thirds majority to govern independently. With 93% of the votes tallied, the Tisza party garnered over 53% support compared to Orbán’s Fidesz party, which received about 37%. The Tisza party is poised to secure 94 out of Hungary’s 106 voting districts.

Orbán, a staunch ally of both former U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, acknowledged defeat following what he described as a “painful” election result. In his concession speech, Orbán expressed his commitment to serving the Hungarian nation and homeland from the opposition.

Addressing a jubilant crowd along the Danube River in Budapest, Magyar hailed the victory as a historical moment where truth triumphed over falsehood. Former supporters of Orbán also joined the celebration, expressing their satisfaction with the election outcome.

The election result signifies a significant shift for Hungary, as Orbán’s administration faced criticism for economic challenges, alleged corruption, and strained relations with EU partners while strengthening ties with Russia. The victory of the Tisza party is expected to herald a new era for Hungary, emphasizing closer alignment with EU values.

The high voter turnout, reaching over 77% by early evening, marked a record in post-communist Hungarian history. Both Orbán and Magyar’s parties reported electoral irregularities, suggesting potential disputes over specific results.

Magyar called for peace and unity following the election, emphasizing the importance of reconciliation after a heated campaign period. The EU will closely monitor Magyar’s stance on Ukraine, as Orbán’s government had previously impeded EU efforts to support the country in its conflict with Russia.

Orbán’s tenure has been marked by controversies, including accusations of undermining democratic institutions, restricting media freedom, and fostering close ties with Putin. The election was characterized as a choice between different political ideologies and values, with voters seeking a shift towards European integration and transparent governance.
