Canadian ice dancers Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier commenced their pursuit of an Olympic medal in the individual ice dance event through the short dance program on Monday. They currently hold the third spot after the short dance, with Maddison Chock and Evan Bates from the United States in second place and Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron of France leading the pack.
Paul Poirier expressed their focus and motivation, mentioning they were fully engaged in the present moment during their performance. The duo aimed to improve their previous performance and felt joy in their program that day.
In the ice dance competition, three Canadian teams participated, including Gilles and Poirier, Marie-Jade Lauriault and Romain Le Gac, and Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha. All three teams made it to the top 20 and qualified for the final free dance programs slated for Wednesday, skating to music from the 1990s as the theme for this season.
Lauriault and Le Gac, making their Olympic debut in the individual short program, scored 74.35 and secured the 15th position. The pair, who previously represented France before switching to Canada in 2020, are coached by Scott Moir and Madison Hubbell.
Lajoie and Lagha, who achieved a season’s best in the team event, delivered a strong performance in the short dance, securing a ninth position with a score of 79.66. Their performance to “Get Ready for This,” “The Power,” and “Ole” advanced them to the final round for the free dance.
Additionally, Gilles and Poirier, ranked fifth globally, are aiming for a podium finish in the individual ice dance event. The pair, skating together since 2011, are determined to make their mark at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics after not medaling in past Games.
