Hello, I’m Emily. Recently, Michael Wiggin from the Boltzmann Institute mentioned using heat from nuclear power plants for district energy. Intrigued, I delved into this concept.

This week’s highlights:
1. Exploring the use of nuclear heat for district heating in various countries.

In Northern China, approximately 400,000 residents across three cities were kept warm this winter through heat supplied by the Haiyang nuclear power plant. The plant contributes to the Warm Nuclear No.1 district heating network, displacing 1.3 million tonnes of coal and reducing CO2 emissions by 2.3 million tonnes as of December 2025.

While this initiative is groundbreaking, the notion of using nuclear plant heat for district heating isn’t novel. Countries like Sweden, Bulgaria, and Switzerland have utilized this technology for decades. Francesco Ganda from the IAEA notes the growing interest in this efficient process, with over 60 reactors worldwide capable of producing both electricity and heat.

In Canada, a project in Hamilton aimed to utilize heat from McMaster University’s research reactor for district heating. Despite initial funding, challenges arose during detailed design studies, leading to project postponement. However, the potential for tapping into heat from existing nuclear reactors in Ontario remains promising.

The Boltzmann Institute estimates that integrating district heating capability into nuclear power plant design adds minimal cost but offers significant benefits in revenue generation and energy efficiency.

Michael Wiggin emphasizes the need for government support to overcome the current impasse in Canada’s adoption of nuclear-derived district heating.
