A unique bird at Good Caws Crow Rescue in Prince George, B.C., has garnered attention for its uncanny ability to mimic a dramatic sneeze. Dayna Slater, the founder of the rescue, shared that the bird, named Huxley, quickly picked up on her distinctive sneezing style and incorporated it into its repertoire of sounds. Huxley, a three-year-old raven, has been captured on video showcasing this talent, along with vocalizing his own name.
Slater established Good Caws after being approached by friends and neighbors who discovered injured corvids and knew of her passion for these birds. Recognizing the lack of local rehabilitation facilities for these creatures, she obtained the necessary permits to care for crows, ravens, and magpies. Currently, the rescue accommodates 20 birds, including 10 crows, two ravens, and two magpies.
Huxley, who fell from his nest in 2023 and cannot fly, now resides permanently at the rescue and serves as an ambassador for the organization. Slater emphasizes the importance of respecting and aiding these creatures, considering their significance in various cultural contexts.
Apart from mimicking sneezes, Huxley displays a vibrant personality and intelligence, enjoying activities such as playing with squeaky toys, taking baths, and interacting with his crow companion, Bobbi. He also expresses dislikes for cold weather, opting to seek shelter indoors during harsh winter conditions. Additionally, he has adopted phrases like his own name and “That’s not cool” from his interactions with Slater, contributing to the lively atmosphere at the rescue.
Slater’s admiration for these birds stems from their individuality and charm, as evident in Huxley’s behavior and interactions within the rescue. His playful nature and vocalizations add a unique element to the atmosphere, captivating both visitors and caretakers alike.
