A bipartisan group of U.S. senators, both Democrats and Republicans, introduced a resolution on Wednesday to prevent the U.S. military from taking action in Venezuela without approval from Congress. This move comes after President Donald Trump hinted at the possibility of a forthcoming ground operation.

Recent reports indicate that U.S. troops have conducted approximately 21 strikes on suspected drug vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific regions since early September, resulting in the deaths of at least 83 individuals. The military actions are part of an escalating strategy by the Trump administration to confront the government of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

President Trump has been considering various options, including a potential incursion into Venezuelan territory, as part of an initiative aimed at curbing the flow of illicit drugs that have caused harm to American citizens. Despite these claims, Maduro has consistently denied any involvement in the illegal drug trade.

In response to President Trump’s statements indicating an imminent ground assault, Senators Tim Kaine, Chuck Schumer, and Adam Schiff from the Democratic Party, along with Republican Senator Rand Paul, jointly submitted a resolution invoking war powers. This resolution is a continuation of their efforts to restrain the administration’s aggressive stance towards Venezuela.

The senators had previously announced their intention to introduce such a resolution if military action was initiated. However, following the recent remarks made by President Trump, they decided to move forward with the resolution sooner than planned. Representative Schiff emphasized the necessity of preventing an unauthorized war with Venezuela, highlighting the potential risks faced by American military personnel.

According to Senate regulations, a war powers resolution holds privileged status, mandating a prompt vote on the matter within a designated timeframe.
