The completion of the water transmission main project near the heart of Sydney is nearing, with only final touches left to be done. The Cape Breton Regional Municipality initiated the replacement of an ancient water main on George Street back in August. This water main caters to about 5,000 customers, including those in downtown Sydney.

Throughout the five-month period, the municipality kept residents informed via email updates and social media posts, notifying them of occasional water shut-offs lasting several hours. However, some residents and businesses reported enduring water disruptions for multiple days during these shut-offs.

James Walsh, the owner of Doktor Luke’s, a local coffee shop, expressed his frustration, mentioning the impact on his business due to the construction. He highlighted the challenges faced in operating the business during the project, even after the water supply was restored, citing ongoing issues with water pressure affecting the quality of their service.

The municipality reported that as of Tuesday, the street had received a fresh layer of asphalt, signaling the project’s near completion.

Christina Lamey, the municipality’s communications manager, described the project as highly intricate, involving significant underground infrastructure. She emphasized the importance of this water main as a crucial transmission line serving the downtown Sydney area and surrounding regions, with the previous infrastructure being over a century old.

Looking ahead, Walsh hopes for better communication from the municipality on future projects impacting residents on a large scale. He stressed the significance of clear communication and adherence to project timelines to minimize disruptions and frustrations.
