The WNBA has granted players a 30-day extension to continue discussions on a new collective bargaining agreement, as informed by two individuals familiar with the matter. The current agreement is nearing expiration on Friday, leading to escalating tensions as negotiations progress. The league is open to extending the deadline to allow more time for both parties to reach a potentially transformative deal, particularly concerning player salaries.

In 2019, a similar extension was agreed upon when the previous CBA expired, leading to the ratification of the current agreement in January 2020. The acceptance of this new extension by the union remains uncertain. ESPN initially reported the extension offer, with WNBPA senior adviser Erin D. Drake highlighting the necessity for mutual collaboration in reaching a deal beyond the impending deadline.

A statement from the league emphasized its commitment to sincere negotiations amid allegations of misinformation dissemination by the Players Association. Recent meetings between the two sides, including one in New York earlier this month, have been part of the ongoing discussions. Players opted out of the current CBA last year, seeking enhancements in revenue sharing, salaries, benefits, and adjustments to the salary cap structure.

While the WNBA has expressed its intention for a transformative agreement with considerable improvements in salaries and benefits, players have indicated dissatisfaction with the current offers. The exact gap between the parties regarding salary terms remains undisclosed. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has underscored the league’s shared goal with players in achieving a significant deal.
