Hyundai Canada has recently announced a safety recall concerning select 2024–2026 Elantra Hybrid vehicles due to a potential fire hazard. The recall affects 6,082 cars in Canada, as confirmed by Hyundai. Despite this issue, there have been no reported fires, incidents, injuries, or fatalities linked to this problem in Canada, according to Hyundai spokesperson Nitish Bissonauth in communication with CBC News.
In the United States, approximately 54,337 vehicles have been recalled by Hyundai due to the same safety concern, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The root of the problem lies in a malfunction of the hybrid power control unit in certain vehicles, leading to a risk of overheating, as explained by Hyundai. The NHTSA warns that this issue may result in a “no start” situation or a decrease in power while driving, potentially leading to overheating and an increased fire risk.
To address this safety concern, Hyundai is actively reaching out to all affected vehicle owners and will conduct a complimentary software update to rectify the overheating issue.
