After dedicating 35 years to serving on the council in the small town of Trepassey, Rita Pennell has decided to step down from her position as mayor. At 88 years old, she was first elected as mayor in 1989 and has held the role intermittently since then. Despite being nominated for re-election, Pennell chose to run for a councilor position this time.
In an interview with CBC Radio’s “On The Go,” Pennell expressed her vitality and sharpness of mind, stating, “I have lots of energy, and my mind is good.” She humorously mentioned her son’s request to inherit her sharp intellect upon her passing.
Pennell acknowledged her continued engagement with Trepassey’s issues but emphasized the burdens that come with the mayor’s responsibilities. The constant phone calls from 7 a.m. till bedtime became a taxing routine for her. Reflecting on a significant event in October 2021 when the town lost one of its ambulances, she recalled her ongoing efforts to address the situation.
Despite reaching out to the provincial government in October 2024 to discuss the construction of a temporary seawall, no progress has been made, leaving Pennell disappointed. With a new Progressive Conservative government in power, she remains hopeful for change, especially with Trepassey’s electoral district historically supporting the Conservative party.
As Pennell steps down, Colin Cheater assumes the mayoral position, with Wanda Waddleton as the deputy mayor, marking a long-anticipated shift in leadership. Pennell expressed her intention to stay active while also making time for personal relaxation.
Looking forward, Pennell anticipates positive outcomes under the new government and the potential support from their local representative, MHA Loyola O’Driscoll, in addressing the town’s pressing issues.
