An event called Beers with Queers, meant to be a safe space for members and allies of the 2SLGBTQ+ community at Together We’re Bitter (TWB) Brewery in Kitchener, was abruptly canceled due to threats of violence.
The brewery’s manager and owner, Amanda Farquhar, revealed that Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) informed them about potential threats from an anti-gay group planning to disrupt the event by inciting violence.
Suzie Taka, the executive director of Spectrum, a community hub for the 2SLGBTQ+ community, also confirmed that police warned about possible targeting of local queer programs or events. As a safety measure, peer support group activities scheduled for Tuesday were moved online.
Police Involvement
WRPS mentioned in a statement to CBC News that they had been made aware of a potential disruption at an unspecified 2SLGBTQI+ event set to occur in Kitchener on October 21, 2025. Safety protocols were put in place after sharing the information with event organizers.
The police statement did not disclose if any charges were filed, the group’s history in the region, or how the authorities learned about the group’s intentions for that Tuesday.
