Laura Greaves embarked on a quest via social media to find a gentle and sociable ewe in Saskatchewan for her blind llama companion, Maple, seeking a friend rather than a breeding ewe. As an experienced equine veterinarian accustomed to tending to animals with various disabilities, Greaves welcomed the challenge of caring for Maple, who required special assistance.

Their solution arrived in the form of Peeps, a talkative sheep from Eyebrow, Sask., known for her vocal nature, making her an ideal match for Maple. Initially seeking a guardian llama to protect her animals from coyotes, Greaves discovered Maple through a friend, Jacquie Poole, who connected with Maple’s story and their shared passion for aiding animals in need.

Undertaking a significant journey to Alberta, Greaves and Poole retrieved Maple, revealing a llama in poor condition with broken teeth, quite different from the photos they had seen. Despite Maple’s challenges, Greaves felt a strong connection and a mutual need between them.

After settling Maple in her new home alongside other camelids, Greaves noticed issues with Maple’s remaining eye, leading to a critical veterinary emergency requiring the removal of both eyes. The complex surgery was successful, although Maple faced difficulties adjusting to total blindness, relying on auditory cues and Greaves’ guidance to navigate her surroundings.

Struggling with anxiety and mistreatment from other animals, Maple was moved to a smaller paddock while Greaves searched for a suitable companion. Peeps emerged as the perfect match, offering Maple emotional support and aiding her navigation through sound cues.

Their evolving bond shows promise as they navigate their shared environment, providing comfort and companionship to each other. Greaves envisions a future where Maple and Peeps can join the other camelids in the field, but for now, they remain a supportive duo in their secluded space.
