In an unexpected move, Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston made significant changes to his cabinet on Tuesday, which included the departure of three ministers, the introduction of two new members, and the reassignment of various responsibilities.
According to a press release, Energy Minister Trevor Boudreau, Natural Resources Minister Tory Rushton, and Justice Minister Becky Druhan are all being replaced in the cabinet. Scott Armstrong will now oversee the justice portfolio and the Office of Equity and Anti-Racism. Emergency Management Minister Kim Masland will take on additional responsibilities by adding natural resources to her duties, while the premier himself will handle the energy portfolio, particularly focusing on offshore wind and critical mineral development initiatives.
Barbara Adams, who currently serves as deputy premier and minister of seniors and long-term care, will now also manage the opportunities and social development portfolio previously held by Armstrong. John A. MacDonald, the MLA for Hants East, is the new municipal affairs minister, taking over the role from Finance Minister John Lohr.
As the province grapples with a projected deficit of $1.2 billion, Lohr is anticipated to be heavily involved in shaping the upcoming 2026-27 provincial budget. Additionally, John White, the Glace Bay-Dominion MLA, has been appointed as the housing minister, although housing will not be established as a standalone department. This move aims to address ongoing criticisms regarding the government’s response to the persistent housing crisis, previously overseen by Growth and Development Minister Colton LeBlanc.
The changes to the cabinet were formalized during a private ceremony on Tuesday.
