Céline Dion is gearing up for her upcoming five-week residency in Paris by sharing more insights into her health journey. The renowned Canadian singer recently opened up in an exclusive interview with Harper’s Bazaar, revealing her battle with stiff person syndrome, a rare neurological autoimmune disorder that she had been grappling with for 17 years before receiving a formal diagnosis in 2022.

The pain associated with the condition intensified in 2020, causing severe discomfort and hindering her mobility to the extent that she sometimes required a high dose of Valium to manage. Stiff person syndrome is a progressive disorder that worsens over time, affecting a minute fraction of the population. Symptoms may include muscle rigidity and painful spasms triggered by stress, loud noises, or sudden movements. Despite the lack of a definitive cause or approved treatment for the condition, various therapies can assist in its management.

Prior to her diagnosis, Céline Dion concealed the true extent of her suffering, often attributing show cancellations to minor ailments like coughs or sinus infections. This led her to feel a sense of dishonesty towards her fans, whom she deeply appreciates for their unwavering support throughout her career.

Following her diagnosis, Dion made the tough decision to cancel all remaining shows but is now preparing to make a comeback to the stage in September after a hiatus since the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. To aid in her recovery, she has adopted a rigorous regimen comprising medication, physical and vocal therapy, immunotherapy, 90-minute Pilates sessions thrice weekly, and ballet classes biweekly to ensure she is in peak form for her upcoming performances.

Described by reporter Jazmine Hughes as someone constantly in motion, Dion views her recovery and the opportunity to perform again as a remarkable blessing that she cherishes. She acknowledges the privilege of her career and the support of her fans, expressing gratitude for the chance to return to the stage. As she looks forward to her Paris residency, which spans from September 12 to May 29 next year, Dion exudes a mix of strength, excitement, and a touch of nervousness about her highly anticipated comeback.
