The NBA is taking action following the recent arrests of Miami’s Terry Rozier and Portland’s Chauncey Billups in connection with alleged gambling activities. The league has initiated a review to safeguard not only the game’s integrity but also the well-being of its players and coaches.

In a memo obtained by The Associated Press and sent to all 30 teams, the NBA’s legal department highlighted the increasing prevalence of legal betting across the U.S., integrity issues in sports, and evolving betting formats. The memo emphasized the importance of reevaluating sports betting regulations to protect sports leagues, players, and fans.

Lawmakers in Washington have also joined the quest for answers. Following a request from a House committee, the Senate, led by Sen. Ted Cruz and Sen. Maria Cantwell, sought information from the NBA regarding the investigation into Rozier and the events surrounding a game on March 23, 2023, during his time with the Charlotte Hornets.

Two indictments were unsealed last week, resulting in the arrest of nearly three dozen individuals, including Billups and Rozier. Rozier faces allegations of conspiring with associates to influence bets based on his performance in a game. The charges mirror those faced by former player Jontay Porter, who was banned from the league in 2024 by Commissioner Adam Silver due to similar allegations.

Although a probe conducted in 2023 did not find evidence of wrongdoing by Rozier, the NBA acknowledged the need for enhanced regulatory measures to preserve the league’s integrity, particularly concerning proposition bets on individual player performance.

Recent developments, such as the NFL reinforcing its gambling policy and MLB’s ongoing investigation into players, have prompted increased scrutiny on sports betting. The NBA expressed its commitment to evaluating injury reports and ensuring transparency in injury disclosures to prevent insider trading incidents like the one involving former player Damon Jones.

With sports betting playing a significant role in today’s sports landscape, the NBA emphasized the importance of educating players, coaches, and personnel about the risks associated with gambling. The league invited input from teams on how to best address these challenges moving forward.
