The town of Ear Falls, Ontario, is currently grappling with a significant challenge following the abrupt and indefinite closure of its sawmill, a key employer and economic engine for the community.

Interfor, the corporation that owns and runs the mill, made the announcement recently. This development is anticipated to result in approximately 150 unionized workers losing their jobs, as stated by the mayor of the township.

Luke Hildebrand, the president of the NDP Kenora-Rainy River Riding Association and a First Nations law practitioner in Kenora, described the situation as more than just a job loss – labeling it a community crisis. In response, Hildebrand has initiated a petition urging the Ontario and federal governments to promptly intervene to assist affected employees and establish a Forestry Job Protection Task Force.

The petition underscores the importance of the forestry sector to Canada’s economy, emphasizing its significant annual contributions and role in sustaining numerous rural positions. It stresses the necessity of Canadian lumber for domestic construction projects, such as building homes.
