More than 69,000 Palestinians have lost their lives in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, according to health officials in the region. The recent surge in fatalities has resulted from the recovery of additional bodies in the heavily damaged Gaza Strip following the implementation of a fragile ceasefire on October 10. These casualties encompass individuals targeted by Israeli airstrikes aimed at combatants that remain in the area.
In line with the terms of the ceasefire agreement, Israel has repatriated the remains of 15 Palestinians to Gaza, a process that reciprocates the return of a hostage’s remains by militants to Israel. The hostage, identified as Lior Rudaeff and born in Argentina, was handed over by the militants, as confirmed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office. The Hostages and Missing Families Forum emphasized the urgency of expediting the return of all hostage remains, prompting demonstrations in Tel Aviv.
The ceasefire, designed to de-escalate the unprecedentedly lethal conflict between Israel and Hamas, was triggered by a Hamas-led assault on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and 251 individuals being taken captive, according to Israeli reports.
Moreover, incidents of violence surged as Israeli settlers launched two separate assaults on Palestinian farmers and civilians in the occupied West Bank during the olive harvesting season. Israel has been releasing the remains of 15 Palestinians for each Israeli hostage repatriated. A total of 300 remains have been returned, with 89 individuals positively identified.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, with the Health Ministry reporting a death toll of 69,169 since the conflict’s inception. The ministry, operating under Hamas administration, has meticulously documented these casualties, with 284 additional individuals identified between October 31 and November 7. The ministry also highlighted the discovery of 10 bodies in the past three days, indicating the ongoing challenges in locating and identifying victims amidst the devastation.
Amid the ongoing tensions, further clashes were reported, with Israeli forces confronting militants in Gaza and settlers engaging in violent altercations with Palestinians in the West Bank.
