A Labrador-based company’s fuel tanker sustained damage during a diesel delivery to a mine site in Nunavut, but the CEO assures that it will not impact the crucial fuel supply to Canada’s Arctic as winter approaches. Peter Woodward, CEO of the Woodward Group of Companies, confirmed that all contracted deliveries will proceed as planned despite the incident.
No injuries or spills occurred when a mechanical failure affected the 129-meter Kivalliq W., owned by the Woodward Group’s affiliate, Coastal Shipping Limited. The vessel, stationed in Baker Lake with around 2,000 residents, continued its fuel offloading operations with one damaged fuel tank. Repairs necessitate the vessel’s drydock entry, pending further investigation and damage assessment.
To ensure uninterrupted fuel supply, Coastal Shipping arranged for a replacement vessel to transport three fuel shipments from Lewisporte to Arctic ports. Woodward emphasized the company’s dedication to Arctic operations and the timely delivery of products to communities and industries.
Despite the regrettable incident, Woodward highlighted the absence of injuries or environmental harm, underscoring the company’s longstanding safety excellence during 26 years of Arctic fuel delivery. Coastal Shipping’s swift response and commitment to fulfilling obligations reflect its reliability in maintaining fuel services to northern regions.
